My Career

Major:

The Coast Guard accepts individuals from various educational backgrounds. There isn't a specific major requirement, but majors related to maritime studies, engineering, or public service may be beneficial.

Universities:

The Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, is the primary educational institution for aspiring Coast Guard officers. You can also consider other colleges and universities for a relevant degree.

SAT Scores/GPA:

To attend the Coast Guard Academy, competitive SAT scores and a strong GPA are required. The specific requirements can change from year to year, so it's best to check the most up-to-date admission requirements on the official Coast Guard Academy website.

Internship:

While not mandatory, internships or volunteer experiences related to maritime activities, public service, or military training can be advantageous.

Graduate School:

Graduate school may not be necessary for all Coast Guard careers, but it can be beneficial for advancement in certain roles or specialties.

Certifications:

The Coast Guard may require specific certifications depending on your career path within the organization. For example, if you aim to become a licensed mariner, you will need to obtain relevant licenses and certifications.

Earning Potential/Growth Potential:

Earnings in the Coast Guard vary depending on rank, experience, and specific job roles. Coast Guard careers offer competitive salaries and benefits. Additionally, there is potential for career advancement through promotions and specialized training.

Classes to Take:

While in high school, focus on a strong foundation in mathematics, science, and English.

Consider taking classes related to physical fitness, as physical fitness is important for Coast Guard recruits.

The Coast Guard offers a wide range of career paths, including law enforcement, search and rescue, maritime safety, and more. The path of choice I am most interested in is the Law enforcement category. I am looking to make the Coasts of the U.S as safe as possible.
